There’s no integrated way with the plugin but you could try something like Advanced Custom Fields which would be great for this I think.

Other than that really you would have to create the meta boxes and then save their data on save_post.

Just curious though, where would somebody have a need for the template tag, which is basically a variable container, if there is no way of instantiating a custom variable within the plugin? Or is that being included now because you have plans to add custom variables in the future?

It was a way for programmers to extend the default functionality of the plugin really. I’ve never actually considered adding a way to create your own metaboxes through the plugin itself. I think it would be a great idea for a future version though!
